How Tend works

Tend is a private, local-first wellness app for Android. It is built around calm daily rhythm and small, repeatable care, not streaks or catch-up guilt. This page explains how it actually behaves, in plain terms.

1. Local-first by default

Tend treats your phone as the real home for your information. Your care anchors, movement, nutrition, journal, and daily rhythm live on your device and work without an account or a connection. The cloud is optional, and nothing essential waits on it.

If you choose to turn on encrypted cloud backup, a copy of your data is encrypted on your phone before it is uploaded, so you can restore it on a new device. You can read the full detail in our privacy policy, or a plain-language explainer ofwhat privacy-first actually means.

2. Care anchors, not streaks

Most habit apps run on streaks: a number climbs while you are consistent, then resets to zero the first time life gets in the way. Tend does the opposite. It uses care anchors, which are small repeatable practices you return to, with nothing to break when you miss a day.

This is a deliberate design choice. A routine you can only keep perfectly is a test you eventually fail. Tend is built to make returning easy, so a gap is never a failure to repair. Here is more onwellness without streaks andgetting back into a routine after a break.

3. The Daily Brief: one kind next step

Instead of a crowded to-do list, Tend gathers your day into one calm view called the Daily Brief, and points to a single next step in a size that fits the day you are actually having.

The idea is simple: small steps survive busy days, low energy, and interruptions, which is exactly when longer plans collapse. You can read the reasoning in our note onthe one small next step and how thecalm Daily Brief gathers your day.

4. A consent-first AI Coach

Tend's optional AI Coach is designed to suggest, not to take over. It follows the same three steps every time for anything meaningful: it suggests, it shows the exact change as a preview, and it waits for your confirmation.

Cloud AI coaching is off until you turn it on, requires sign-in and Tend Pro, and only ever uses the context you choose to share. Quick, reversible logs can apply immediately with an undo, but anything that changes your plan, journal, or health data arrives as an exact preview you confirm first. More on how theAI Coach asks before it acts and whether an AI wellness coach is safe to trust.

5. What stays private, and what leaves only by choice

Tend is private by default. Your wellness records stay on your phone, with no ads and no advertising trackers. Nothing about your health leaves your device unless you turn on an optional cloud feature such as encrypted backup or Cloud AI coaching.

Crash reporting is on by default to help fix problems and can be turned off in Privacy, and usage analytics is off unless you opt in. Tend does not sell your data or share it for ads.

6. Wellness support, not medical care

Tend helps with practical everyday wellness: daily rhythm, movement, nutrition, focus, and recovery. It does not diagnose, prescribe, treat, or replace professional care, and pattern insights are observations rather than clinical findings.

If a concern involves urgent symptoms, medication, pregnancy red flags, self-harm, or eating patterns that feel hard to control, that deserves professional or human support, and Tend is not a substitute. In an emergency, contact your local emergency services.
